Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday while presenting his maiden finance budget has given the students of the nation a reason to feel happy about. In his budget the finance minister has proposed to set up five IITs and IIMs, apart from four AIIMS.
Last month president Pranab Mukherjee had indicated towards this move to establish these institutes of national importance in his address to the joint sitting of both the houses of the parliament. He had said”We will set up IITs and IIMs in every state. In order to empower school teachers and students, a national e-library will be established”.
The proposal to set up new IITs and IIMs has received mixed reaction from the public in general. The social media is abuzz with reaction from the people. Lots of people are of the opinion that the move to establish more of these institutions will result in the dilution of the repute of these institutions, and instead of setting up new ones the government should concentrate on improving the quality of these institutes. These institutions are already facing the problem of not getting qualified professors. There is a large section of the population that thinks that the move of setting up new IITs and IIMs will reduce the pressure from the students and their parents and more students will get the opportunity to get education from these institutions, thus increasing their employability.
The move to establish IIMs in backward states like Bihar and Odhisha and AIIMS in Purvanchal and Vidarbha is being appreciated.
